After Japan
Julia and Alison explored some of the iconic pottery of Japan on their visit to this beautiful nation in July 2024. Celebrating their work, they are now preparing for an exhibition inspired by their reflections a Studio 40 Gallery in Dartington.

Julia Toy’s ceramics are both thrown and hand-built using her own blends of clay with inclusions sourced by Julia from in and around Dartington and Totnes and from her travels in Japan. Influenced by the pottery seen in Japan Julia’s work features functional and decorative ware.
Alison Hannah makes thrown domestic-ware on the potters’ wheel. Working in stoneware with raw materials sourced in the clay-pits of Cornwall and Devon, her work aims to illustrate the journey of this precious material from its’ formation 27 million years ago to its’ functional form as it is today in 2025.
