Nikki Smith

All the “white” (black and in-between) stuff.

I spent my career working as a photographer in London. Five years ago, I retired and moved to the South Hams in Devon. I had a go at ceramics and fell in love with all things clay. I hand build and throw, which I then like to alter. I love colour, using slips, stains, oxides and underglazes on my work. I draw and design onto my ceramics using sgraffito techniques, transfers, stencils and hand painting. I like to add character to my pieces, using tools, found objects, stamps and layers of slip to create surface texture.

I am experimenting with using transfers and my photographs on my pots, by making them into decals, that I then cut and tear, apply and finally give them a third firing.

I am influenced by the colours, creatures and nature of the coast where I live. I still have much to learn, enjoy experimenting and trying new things.
