Lucy’s journey with clay started in 2017 and continues to evolve. It is all wheel thrown and is a mixture of functional and also more decorative items which are fired outdoors in a barrel. This gives a variety of smoke effects with each piece being unique and unable to be replicated. She particularly likes this method as she often uses items which would usually go into the compost bin - banana skins, seaweed, driftwood, used coffee grinds, nut shells and the shavings from a local wood turner.
When working with clay Lucy is enchanted, everything else disappears, her worries and her inner critic softens and dissolves to be replaced by a present moment awareness and an acute noticing of how her mood in each moment affects what she produces.

“For me, throwing is the personification of mindfulness. It allows for a single pointed focus with no space for the critical mind. It envelopes all of my senses and demands their attention”.
Pottery provides a place of calm and a creative outlet for a variety of emotions such as frustration and self worth. Ceramics now helps me to feel more connected to the earth, to my body and it supports my mental wellness.
It helps me to center myself.

I am now regularly teaching throwing on the wheel classes at The Clay Yard in Totnes as well as workshops. Check out their website to find out more about joining classes with me.
I am also running the pottery at Landworks. This is a project that provides a supported route back into employment and the community for people in prison or at risk of going to prison. Its a fantastic opportunity for me to combine my experience as a support worker and my love of clay. I have noticed the therapeutic benefit that clay has on these individuals.
If you are interested in learning how to throw on the wheel, whether this is one-to-one or for a group of friends, please drop me an email.
