Julia Toy

Incorporating physical materials into her work, Julia creates a personal narrative that connects her work to notions of time and place.

Julia’s work is an extension of her love for life and spiritual connection to the natural world. It is informed by an ever-changing variety of people, places and experiences.

She forages clays and slips locally and return home from swims, runs and travels with pocketfuls of found objects, both man-made and natural. These are embedded into clay and glazed, and informs the beginnings of each piece of work. Occasionally, these are used as additions after the final firing.

“I return home from swims, runs and travels with pocketfuls of found objects”

The unpredictability and unique character of each piece continues with the metamorphosis and interaction of all the elements during the firing phase.

Julia’s work is an ongoing inquiry into the ephemeral and imperfect nature of life, which to her, feels particularly fragile at the moment.

Julia has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art/Sculpture from Cardiff and a PGCSE in Art and Design from Goldsmiths.

She has a studio in Totnes and teaches ceramics locally.
