Janice Tall

I cast and carve shells and add them to bowls and plates.

I work mainly with stoneware, using hand building and throwing techniques to make functional tableware and ornamental vessels. My fascination with this media comes from my background as a scientist and my love for the visual arts. Ceramics combines the technical, the visual and the tactile to give endless creative possibilities. I take my inspiration from my home which is in an ancient woodland that gives way to the wild coastline of South Devon.

I love to play with slip to create texture, forms and patterns which decorate and alter my vessels. For my domestic ware I collect grasses and seed heads from around my home and use them to decorate mugs, jugs, bowls, and jars.

My ornamental pieces are inspired by the local rock pools, winter storms, and waves crashing against the shore. I cast and carve shells and add them to bowls and plates. Slips and different glazes are then layered to give the appearance of waves splashing against the pot, the shell clinging on to save it from the sea.
