Nikki started to learn ceramics as her working life as a photographer began to slow down. She moved to Devon from London two and half years ago, and started to spend more than just an evening class trying to improve. She is still an amateur potter, with characterful wobbles, mistakes and inconstancies. But I am learning and improving all the time.
Nikki loves the feel of clay - the mess and freedom of it. She throws, but also hand builds one-offs with their individual characters. She often alters the shape of her thrown pieces as well to give them more of the uniqueness of a hand build. She considers that colour will be a lifelong passion - using slips, oxides and glazes, followed closely by texture and layering. She uses her drawing skills to make sgraffito work, an area in which she has become increasingly confident,. Nikki hopes to find ways to incorporate her photography into her work using decals of her photographs.
"I was told ceramics is a journey - I'm just pausing along the way to take it all in.."
