With a previous background in science the experience of working with clay and making functional forms was a revelation. Her love of pottery, especially throwing has grown ever since.
The opportunity to explore new techniques and try new things are endless in ceramics and this is what excites, and often distracts Jess! Using the potter’s wheel to make predominately tableware has been her main focus. There is a great joy in drinking tea from a handmade mug and soup always seems to taste better from a bowl made hand.
Glazing is where Jess really likes to experiment. There are so many options she cannot stop trying new techniques, as reflected in the wide variety in style and design of her work. Be it electric, gas, wood or soda firing, or even the use of decals to embellish work Jess continues to explore and expand her work. As a result the majority of her portfolio is one of pieces or small batches.
Jess has for the first time been exploring hand building techniques whilst away from her studio. This has been a bit of a revelation and she plans to increasingly explore thrown and altered ceramics to make interesting shapes. Having been donated a friend’s driftwood collection Jess has been exploring mix media ceramics add wood handles to jugs, bowls and spoons.
