Caroline’s first foray into pottery was whilst studying at Art College in Ireland. Having found space in her life to dip back into the Arts she studied at The Potting Shed, Ashprington & before becoming a Member at Studio 45, Dartington under the expert tuition of Richenda MacGregor and Verran Townsend which proved a turning point in her creative pursuits.
“If you are a tactile person, then clay will automatically work for you and you will find great joy working it”.
Walks around the Devon and Cornish landscape, Caroline tunes in to natural forms, shapes and contours of the landscape in all weathers, and gains inspiration from her surroundings. Finding and extracting raw clay and minerals and the eventual shaping, forming and firing holds something magical for Caroline. She has an endless energy for experimentation. Inspired by the processes and methods of Dartmoor ceramicist Kate Lyons-Miller, Caroline adds natural materials sourced from the land and sea to present tactile textures and shape to her work. Her current focus on the production of silver-birch inspired pots reflects these purist processes and elements.
Caroline has more recently moved into the use of materials that can be used to add colour too as well as texture. A course led by renowned Devon artist Laurel Keeley enabled her to understand the value of using coloured slips and oxides in visually interesting and tactile ways.
Caroline encourages others to “Find inspiration by what you see in nature – look, see and observe texture, light, place and form and you will find your inner creative self”.
